The world’s number one golfer, Tiger Woods has often said the primary trick to successful golf is being pin high. The biggest difference between professional and amateur golfers is the confidence they experience in their approach shots. With the assistance of a laser range finder duffers now have the power to understand the distance and hit their irons with the same control as a professional golfer.

This Bushnell Pinseeker 1500 review will present you a general outline of this golf laser rangefinder and describe its benefits and talk about the results that other amateur golfers have found using the Pinseeker tournament edition on the course.

Very similar to the Busnell Pinseeker 1500 Slope edition; our research from Bushnell Pinseeker 1500 reviews established that the 1500 was a very well loved tool, the non-slope edition is the tournament sanctioned and handicap approved edition of the Slope. Therefore the pitch measuring tools are absent as they would be in breach of the local rules of tourney and handicapping for the sport.

Bushnell Pinseeker 1500 Review of Features

Bulls Eye Mode: Evaluates the yardage to the object directly in the cross hairs. With the potent 7x optical enlargement, bulls-eye will be the best aiming method.

Brush: De-emphasizes foreground obstacles like tree branches, or bushes when pointing the green farther down the hole.

PinSeeker: Allows careful discerning pointing approaches: avoid the possibility of capturing background targets. When more than one object is in the target the closer object will be read. This mode is valuable for not having your distance readings fouled up by shrubs or other objects down the line of the flagstick.

Scan: This mode can continuously update yardage readings while you look over the hole with the laser range finder. Great for determining on the minimum distance to carry over obstacles.

Golfers Testimonials for the Bushnell 1500 Tournament

The following are testimonials from real Bushnell Pinseeker 1500 Tournament buyers:

“If you’re having a goal of increasing your greens in regulation or GIR, I recommend this device.”

“I really liked the Pinseeker selective mode indicator that allows you to see when you have a fix on the pin without seeing golfers or other objects behind the flag.”

“I have also used a SkyCaddie but was annoyed at having to pay a yearly fee for yardage data (common with golf GPS) so I thought the Bushnell could be just what the doctor ordered. It hasn’t let me down.”

“I have found the Pinseeker 1500 Tournament Edition easy to carry, simple to use even in windy conditions, accurate and instant.”

Summary Review of the Bushnell 1500 Tournament Laser Rangefinder

Going over the Bushnell Pinseeker 1500 reviews we received from owners of the device, it was clear that owner satisfaction for the Pinseeker 1500 is very high. A vast majority of buyers reviewed the Pinseeker 1500 with the highest possible 5 star rating.

Golf rangefinders are designed to improve your golf game by providing accurate distance readings to objects on the course. They use an eye safe laser to target an object and then measure the time it takes for the laser to bounce off the object and return to the rangefinder.

There are many different models with various features and quality levels on the market. In this article we’ll present mini-reviews for the top 5 laser rangefinders.

Bushnell PinSeeker 1500 Tournament

A premium laser rangefinder from one of the world top optical device manufacturers. The 1500 tournament edition provides range readings from 5 to 1,500 yards at an accuracy of + or – one yard.

The Pinseeker 1500 has a 7x magnification monocular for viewing your target. This is one of the highest magnification levels available

This rangefinder comes with Bushnell’s patented PinSeeker technology allows easy targeting of the flag while avoiding the possibility of capturing background targets. When more that one object is targeted the closer will be read.

This is an important feature, since getting an accurate lock on the flagstick from longer yardages is one of the toughest functions for a laser rangefinder.

Leupold GX-I Rangefinder Pinhunter

A tournament and handicap legal golfing rangefinder from optical device company Leupold. Not extraordinary, it provides all the expected functionality at a reasonable price.

2 top features found in the GX-I are:

Pinhunter – technology to make taking yardage readings off of the flag much easier.

Scan Mode – gives yardages of any objects in the viewfinder as you scan across the course.

Given Leupold’s fine name and experience, expect the optical quality to be high. Pinhunter technology is a great feature for an entry level laser rangefinder.

Bushnell PinSeeker 1500 Slope

The PinSeeker 1500 Slope edition is exactly the same as the 1500 tournament edition with the exception of the added slope functionality.

“Slope” allows you to calculate distances with special compensation for uphill or downhill targets. This can make a big difference in club selection and using a slope edition laser rangefinder can allow you to dial in much more accurately than a regular rangefinder.

However, make sure that you are aware that any scores shot with the PinSeeker 1500 Slope edition rangefinder cannot be used for handicap purposes, and it will not be allowed in any tournament play.

Leupold GX-II Rangefinder Pinhunter

A high end rangefinder for the serious golfer, the GX-II is the advanced version of the GX-I rangefinder from Leupold. It has many innovative features, including slope calculations to give precise distances on uphill or downhill holes; unfortunately these advantages make it legal only for practice rounds.

Premium features include:

Inclinometer & True Golf Range (TGR) – The Leupold GX™-II compensates for uphill shots that play long and downhill shots that play short.

Club Selector – Factoring your specific striking distance, automatically recommends the appropriate club for each shot

Temperature & Altitude – has settings for factoring temp and alt, to ensure the ultimate in accuracy of your shots. (Input of temp and alt is manual.)

The feature set is unparalleled in a rangefinder. No other golfer’s distance device on the market offers temperature calibration and pin selection.

Note: as with the Bushnell 1500 Slope edition, the Leupold GX-II is not legal for use in rounds which will be submitted for handicap or in any tournament play.

Callaway Rangefinder LR1200

This top of the market rangefinder was designed by two big sporting companies. To ensure an accurate yardage device, Callaway has licensed the optical technology for this laser rangefinder from Nikon.

The LR1200 claims has been targeted to professional tournament caddies, and it the flagship of the Callaway rangefinder models. Rangefinders are not allowed for use in professional tournaments but caddies use them extensively to map courses before any tournaments.

Besides the ultra high quality optics supplied by Nikon, the most notable feature for the Callaway LR1200 is:

First Target Priority Mode – displays the range to the nearest target among multiple results obtained with a single measurement. This is designed to increase accuracy when aiming at a pin with a background of trees, something that can be a problem for unsophisticated rangefinders.

Callaway and Nikon’s LR1200 is designed to be the best rangefinder on the market, worthy of it’s billing as the “Official rangefinder of the PGA of America.”

These are the top laser rangefinders on the market. They are all very high quality devices and any would be a good aid for any golfer. When buying a laser rangefinder, not all are tournament legal or legal for use in handicap rounds, so make sure that you are buying one that fits your needs.

Based on consumer opinions and my own research the following is a list of the top 5 highest rated golf GPS units on the market. Each mini report includes the features and benefits that separate the GPS from the competition.

Garmin GolfLogix GPS

Probably the most precise, durable and user-friendly golf GPS on the market. Fancy color graphics of some units have been traded for clarity and readability in the Garmin GolfLogix.

Unit holds up to 20 courses, and is very light weight. If you care about having the “latest” flashy GPS unit then the GolfLogix is not for you. However, it is made by Garmin, and may in fact be the most accurate golf GPS on the market.

Bushnell Yardage Pro GPS

“For the golfer who just wants to know the distance to the front, middle and back of the green.”

A bare bones golf GPS system that just provides accurate yardages with no frills. The main advantages are ease of use, lightweight and simplicity to understand the readings.

Upro Golf GPS

The Upro is a next generation Golf GPS unit. Upro allows you to purchase course data on a “per course” basis. And there are 2 levels of data for each course. The PRO data, includes video flyovers for each hole!

The uPro is thinner, sleeker, and lighter than any other product on the market. It looks like a cross between a GPS and an iPhone.

The uPro Golf GPS system charges for course data rather than a yearly fee. If you golf primarily on a only a couple courses, this can be a big cost savings.

In short this is the golf GPS for you if you want the latest high tech device that will not only improve you game but amaze your friends with its cool factor.

SkyCaddie SG5 Golf GPS

If you want to buy a device to help you with your yardages on the golf course, you have two choices: a golf GPS unit, or a laser rangefinder for golf. In this article we explore the advantages of a golf GPS system. Most of the advantages listed below are from consumer reports by owners of GPS units who have used them to improve their confidence on the course.

1. No Need to Aim

You don’t have to aim it at a target to get a yardage reading, like you would have to with a laser rangefinder. This can be an advantage if your target is not in your line of site; an elevated green or you are behind a bush for example.

2. No Wobbling or Steadiness Problems

Also, you don’t have to have a steady hand or accurate eye to line up a GPS unit like you would with a range finder.

3. No Need to Point or Acquire a Target

I started with a Sonocaddie laser rangefinder last year and really hated having to pick it up and focus every time. Plus sometimes hitting the flag through the viewfinder was a pain. So I switched to GPS.

4. No Need to Avoid Background Objects

With GPS you walk up and take a glance to get yardages. With a laser, you have to have a steady hand, and sometimes (at least the few times I’ve used them) you can pick up a tree or whatever instead of the pin. And don’t forget the blind shots that can happen frequently.

5. Greater Confidence

Anyone considering whether or not a GPS unit is even worth it; don’t think on it any longer. Imagine rounds so smooth. Hitting the ball so well since I can really judge the accuracy. Walk to my ball and say ok: 136 front, 150 center, pick a club, swing! It’s fantastic.

6. Know the Front & Back Yardages to the Green

If you’re a medium to low handicapper the pin yardage is not always what you want to know. A GPS which tells me front/rear of green yardages. This helps me choose my club much better than just knowing the exact yardage to the flag stick.

7. Learn to Think Like a Pro Golfer

Golf GPS units are about smart golf. Which is about playing to the right part of a green, and a basic knowledge of where the pin is enough to locate that spot. GPS is better at telling me the yardage to that “smart” location and therefore encourages smart golf.

The bottom line is that a golf GPS unit can improve your game. Not only by improving the confidence of your shot making, but also by providing better information to encourage better shot selection and course management, which is where most golfers lose strokes.

In this article we’ll explore the benefits of golf GPS units in comparison to laser rangefinders for golf. Both devices are designed to provide golfers with accurate yardage readings, but they both function quite differently and each has different strengths and weaknesses.

How a Rangefinder Works

A rangefinder is much different than a GPS. It is an optical device which is somewhere between a pair of binoculars and a laser gun that would be used to measure speeding drivers by a highway patrol officer.

The optical system, much like a rifle scope, allows you to select and lock onto the object that you want to measure the distance for (a flag stick on a green for example).

Then the golf rangefinder shoots an “eye safe” laser at the target, and measures the time it takes for the laser to bounce off of the target and return to the rangefinder. From this time delay, the rangefinder can calculate accurately how far away the target is.

How a Golf GPS Unit Works

To keep it simple, a golf GPS is a satellite based mapping device. It communicates with overhead satellites to pinpoint your exact location on the Earth and then uses previously recorded locations on the golf course, to tell you the distance to any important locations near you (front of the green for the hole you are playing for example).

Advantages of a Golf GPS

You don’t have to aim it at a target to get a yardage reading. This can be an advantage if your target is not in your line of site; an elevated green or you are behind a bush for example.

Also, you don’t have to have a steady hand or accurate eye to line up a GPS unit like you would with a range finder.

Advantages of Laser Rangefinders for Golf

The latest model Range finders have up to 7x magnification. This can be very useful, not only for guiding the laser to get accurate yardage measurements to your target, but also for locating landing areas.

For example, it is impossible to locate a ridge on a green that could that should be avoided from 175 yards with the naked eye. With a range finder, you could spot it easily and play safely to the other side of the green, resulting in an easier birdie putt.

Another advantage is that a laser rangefinder can be used on the practice range to see how far you are hitting each club.

The short answer is neither a GPS nor rangefinder is better, they are similar, but different; and they have different strengths and weaknesses.

The best way to solve that problem is to have one of each! but that isn’t always realistic, so study the facts to decide which one is better for your game.

Professional golfers don’t pay caddies 10% just to carry their clubs; the real value is all about the hours that the caddie spends mapping yardages and distances on the golf course. Obviously knowing detailed yardage information to every green, hazard or sand trap on a golf course will improve your game.

Golfing GPS and rangefinders are designed to bring the knowledge of a caddie to any golfer. Everyone I know who has tried either type of these yardage devices has experienced at least a couple strokes improvement per round.

Improved Knowledge of the Golf Course

The primary benefit of GPS and rangefinders is to get insider knowledge of the course. Without these devices distance judgment is mostly guessing, “feel” and based on experience. If you’re playing a new course the lack of specific yardage distances can lead to missed shots and cost you valuable strokes.

Having at hand the exact yardage to the front, center and back of the green, not only helps you judge what club to hit and how hard to hit it, but also can help you make better decisions.

A lot of good players, not only decide where to aim their shot, but also the preferred spot to miss. A yardage tool can help make these choices and make you a smarter player who shoots lower scores.

Accurate Knowledge of Yardage for Each Club

One of the lesser appreciated benefit of a yardage device is for the golfer to know exactly how far you hit each of your golf clubs. This allows you to have much greater confidence when hitting a tough golf shot, over water or in front of a bunker.

For me, without a GPS or rangefinder, when I’m shooting over water, not only do I have to guess the carry distance, but also what the best club is for me to carry that yardage.

With a GPS or rangefinder, I can “map” all my clubs on the driving range and for example know that I hit my 8 iron anywhere from 140 – 155 yards. This improves my accuracy and more importantly improves confidence when making tough shots.

The first thing to be aware of is that a laser rangefinder is much different than a GPS. It is an optical device that is a cross between a pair of binoculars and a laser gun that is used to catch speeding drivers by a highway patrol officer.

The optical system (like a rifle scope) allows you to select and lock onto the target that you want to determine the distance for (a flag stick on a green for example).

Here are the 5 facts that you need to consider before picking up a laser rangefinder to improve you golf game.

1. The object must be in view: a rangefinder can only target object that it can lock onto. High magnification optics can make it easier to spot flags, but can make it harder to hold the device steady enough to get a good reading.

The latest models have technologies, like Bushnell’s PinSeeker, which make locking on to distant pins much easier.

Many courses now, aware of the popularity of rangefinders have begun to install mirrors or prisms on top of their flag sticks. It makes picking up the yardage a lot faster.

2. If you are shooting over a hill or over a bunch of trees, you won’t get any yardage information, since the flagstick will not be in view.

3. The latest model Range finders have a powerful 7x magnification monocular.

4. Another great feature of a laser rangefinder is that it can be used on the practice range to see how far you are hitting each club. This data can be club selection much more precise when you are playing a real round of golf.

5. The size of the lens in millimeters determines how much light comes through the lens and makes the unit easier to use, especially in low light situations. The best units will have a 27mm lens.

Is the Rangefinder Tournament Legal?

When you decide on the model you like, either rangefinder or GPS, make sure you know whether or not it is handicap and tournament legal.

The short answer is that yes, most GPS and rangefinders can now be used legally in tournaments and for handicap rounds, however rangefinders that go beyond simple distance measurement and calculate compensations for uphill or downhill shots (these are called “slope” rangefinders) are not legal.

They are perfectly fine to use for practice, but cannot be used for tournaments or handicap rounds, even if the “slope” features are turned off.

The information supplied should at least get you started in selecting the right type of rangefinder to suit your golfing game.

The first thing to understand is that a golf GPS is a satellite based mapping device. It communicates with overhead satellites to pinpoint your exact location on the Earth.

It then uses previously recorded, or mapped, locations on the golf course to tell you the distance to any important locations near you like the front of the green for the hole you are playing for example.
Here are the 5 Facts that Will Help you choose the Right Golf GPS Unit

1. The course must be mapped: you won’t get any useful information on a course the first time you use your GPS if the course hasn’t been previously mapped by you, another user or the GPS company, and stored on your GPS device.

This shouldn’t be a problem if you live in a popular area, but if you live outside a major city, you may need to manually map your home course the first time you play it. Also, some golf GPS company will “map a course by request” if they haven’t done it yet.

2. You must have satellite reception for your golf GPS to function. More and more this is not an issue, but if your connection to the satellite is weak or not present; your device will be useless.

3. A golf GPS won’t work under a canopy of trees, since it will lose satellite connectivity.

4. Many GPS companies require a fee to their mapping service. To be able to continue to download new courses (units will often only store 10 to 20 courses) you may have to pay a one-time or annual fee to a “course mapping information” provide like iGolf.

5. One of the huge advantages of a golf GPS is that you don’t have to aim it at a target to get a yardage reading. This can especially useful if your target is not in your line of site; an elevated green or you are behind a bush for example, or in the wrong fairway (talking from my own experience here!).

Which is Better Golf GPS or a Rangefinder?

Consider the following: “If I had to use only one device, I would go with a golf GPS unit. Smart golf is about playing to the right parts of the greens and fairways. GPS is better at telling me the yardage to that “smart” location, since it provides front, center and back of the green distance and not just the flag stick, like a rangefinder would.”

The last thing to know is that most GPS and rangefinders can now be used legally in tournaments and for handicap rounds, however read the rule carefully since they are considered “local” rules and can therefore be changed by tournament organizers.

It’s always a good idea to seek out independant or actual user golf GPS reviews as an aide in making an informated decision. The information in this article should help make you determine that factors that are important to you when purchasing a golf GPS unit.
