Upro Golf GPS Review

Consumer Report
Upro-Golf-GPS The uPro Golf GPS is next generation Golf GPS unit. Unlike its competitors it allows you to purchase course data on a “per course” basis. And there are 2 levels of data for each course. The PRO data, includes video flyovers for each hole!

The uPro is thinner, sleeker, and lighter than any other product on the market. It looks like a cross between a GPS and an iPhone.

Basic Mode Course Data

  • Hazard View: Shows the distance to the front and back of all hazards and differentiates the type of hazard. Hazards are automatically displayed in sequential order based on current user position.
  • Green View: Large, easy to read numbers that depict the distance to the front, center, and back of the green.

Pro Mode Course Data

  • Video Flyover: Each hole in the Pro Mode has a video flyover that allows the user to see the layout of the hole from an aerial perspective.
  • Measure Mode: Scale accurate measurements are used to measure to and from any point on the golf course, even the outskirts of the rough.
  • SmartView™: Users are always shown pertinent information based on their actual location. Three different views allow the user to plan out the perfect shot.

The uPro Golf GPS system charges for course data rather than a yearly fee. If yo golf primarily on a only a couple courses, this can be a big cost savings.

uPro Golf GPS Reviews, Overview and User Feedback

Rating: 7 / 10

Actual User Feedback:

“Only came with one fly over view, and cost $10 per course or $60 to have some courses which is more than market leader Skycaddie charge for ($49.95 per year) or Sonocaddie ($29.95 one time fee).

You need to buy extra accessory to hold it (no belt clip) to be usable.

The fly over view really fly you by and is not worth the trouble. The battery is slim and useless after one round.

Overall, not worth the money or time.

One of the uPro GPS reviews on Amazon

“I’ve golfed with mine for the last two weeks and have no complaints. I’d recommend the uPro to anyone looking to buy a gps unit, no monthly fees, and true course aerial images.”

Suggestions Based on My Use of the UPro

  • Create a graphical overlay for the aerial views, or figure out a way to make them higher contrast. The Pro Mode can be somewhat difficult to see in bright sunlight.
  • Faster downloading/sync
  • Find and fix the bugs in the software that cause the freeze-ups!
  • If the upcoming software can mark every ball location, its only a matter of time before it will keep your score, shot-by-shot. On the uPro website they state that additional software to keep score will be available by late summer 2008. Of course, if it freezes up and you lose data then such a feature is worthless.

This is a very new company and a very new product. Like most new products, they have a few bugs to work out. I’m going to stick with them and hopefully they will be committed to fixing the problems. If a year goes by and the same problems exist, I might regret this purchase. But right now I’m pretty darn happy with it!”

Portion of uPro GPS Golf Rangefinder user review on The Sand Trap forum

“So you can call me a guinea pig, I bought a uPro. And I love it. It’s been dead on accurate every time I’ve used it and it’s never lost the signal. My husband wanted me to get the SG5, but I really liked the flyover feature so I decided to go with the uPro. I’m really glad I did. “

Partial user review on golfwrx.com forum of the uPro GPS

Our Research on uPro GPS Suggests:

The reviews are mixed on this GPS unit. Some love it, and others, not so much.

Most of the complaints stem from the unit “freezing” up. One review that I read said that he was seeing this problem, but once he disabled the auto hole advance (which he found annoying anyway) the unit hasn’t ever frozen up again.

Course downloads are done per course, which is great since you aren’t tied to an annual subscription and if you play only a few courses it is cheap, and if you can afford to play 50 different courses a year, then you won’t mind the additional cost.

Limitations:

  • No score keeping (although it has been promised as a free upgrade by Upro by end of summer 2008).

Verdict:

If you like to have the latest in gadgets, this is the golf GPS for you. The fly overs can give you a serious edge when playing a new course, and they look cool too.

If it didn’t have some technical problems that may scare some users, it would be hands down the most advanced GPS on the market.
