“I focused on the Bushnell V2 and Callaway LR550. The Callaway is waterproof, the Bushnell is not. It comes with a nice neoprene case, the Bushnell doen’t. It has better magnification and is easier to hold than the Bushnell. Lastly I thought the first sight technology worked much better than Bushnell’s Pinseeker.

The LR550 is super easy to use. Both weigh about the same. If you wear glasses the added rubber eyepiece helps you block unwanted sunlight and keeps your eye focused.”

“Out of the 3 of them, the 550 does everything the 800 and 1200 do, its just not as powerful and ranges 550 yards. The 1200 is more for hunting and sailing. I have used all three, its water proof and windproof and can shoot to multiple targets. Also its First target Priority mode is cool.”

Our Research on Callaway Nikon LR550 Suggests:

This seems like a very sensible rangefinder. It is half the price of Callaway’s high end “professional” rangefinder and doesn’t really lack any significant features (the biggest is 550 yard range vs 1200 and only 8 second scan mode).

The other limitation is that it comes in only yellow and white, and is called a “woman’s” rangefinder on the Callaway site. Very strange branding on Callaway’s site, I can’t think of anything which would make a rangefinder gender specific.

(By the way, all of the user reviews were from men.)

Verdict:

This is a very wise rangefinder to purchase, lots of quality and a great price. If you’re a guy, you’ll just have to cross your fingers that none of your buddies visit the Callaway golf site and look up your model. Either that, or you’re just too cool to care about stuff like that!

“The Callaway Nikon 800 had horrible results on the golf course. It failed at 140yds and greater.

If the flag is not moving or if there is no golfers on the green to aim at,  you are left with nothing to target.

I used my buddies Bushnells and they didn’t have this problem at the same yardages.”

“The Callaway golf LR800 is a good product.

Within a couple seconds I knew the distance to flag and all hazards. You can get a distance to anything that isn’t flat.

The only negative about it is its hard to keep steady. Because it magnifies 6x, it can get a little shaky when you’re trying to get a lock on the flag.”

To be fair the Callaway LR800 is a new product and there are not a lot of actual user reviews available.

From the golfers we surveyed who have tried it and compared it shares a similar problem to its more expensive siblings; it is difficult to lock onto the flagstick and get an accurate reading.

Verdict:

Unless, you have brand loyalty and want everything in your bag to say “Callaway” on it, then for about the same price you’ll find the Bushnell Pinseeker 1500 is a better choice.

“I like the Callaway Nikon LR1200 just fine but, for me anyway, it does not perform on the course as well as the Pinseeker 1500TE. I like the horizontal orientation (like binoculars) and the Bushnell’s “Pinseeker” mode works better for me than the Nikon’s “First Target Priority” Mode.”

“The 1500 is MUCH easier to shoot than the Callaway Nikon. Even in FTP mode I still had trouble picking up pins when there were trees in the background.

With the Callaway I was shooting each target 2-5 times depending on the distance and background, which was a hassle.

-I do like the neoprene case that comes with the Callawy LR1200 and I like the looks of the LR better as well, but those were not enough to make up for its deficencies.

-The Callaways DOES process the distances faster than the Bushnell, hands down.. but you will be shooting the target more than 2 times to get the distance the Bushnell will get on the first try.”

Our Research on Callaway Nikon LR1200 Suggests:

To be fair the Callaway LR1200 is a new product and there are not a lot of actual user reviews available.

Overall it does seem to be a high quality laser rangefinder, but since it is the most expensive one on the market, it has high expectations to live up to.

From the golfers we surveyed who have tried it and compared it to the Bushnell PinSeeker 1500, the Busnell does to a better job of grabbing the pin yardage when presented with a pin with trees behind it.

This is the most difficult thing for a laser rangefinder to accomplish, and it is the most important feature for golfers. Afterall, it’s nice to measure the distance of your drive, but it’s knowing an accurate yardage to the pin that will make the most diffference in on your scrorecard.

Verdict:

Unless, you are addicted to the Callaway brand or really value a neoprene case then you’ll probably be better off with the Bushnell 1500.

It makes sense that a company like Busnell, which specializes in optical devices is probably going to do a better job on a rangefinder, than Callaway who have manufactured primarily golf clubs.
